UK Seller Profit Calculator

The price you sell something for isn’t what you keep. Marketplace fees, payment processing, postage, packaging and, for VAT-registered sellers, VAT all come out first, and they add up to very different amounts on eBay, Etsy, Amazon, Vinted and your own website.

Enter your selling price and costs below to see your real profit and margin on each platform side by side, plus the minimum price you’d need to charge to break even.

Where you sell Fees VAT to pay Profit Margin Break-even price

Fees checked October 2026 for UK sellers selling to UK buyers. Fees include 20% VAT where the platform charges it, unless you’re VAT registered, in which case we assume you reclaim it. Always confirm current fees on each platform before pricing.

Private sellers on eBay and Vinted pay no selling fees on most items; the buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee at checkout instead. eBay business: category rate plus 0.35% regulatory fee on the total sale, plus 30p per order (40p over £10). Etsy: 20p listing, 6.5% transaction, 4% + 20p payment processing and 0.48% regulatory fee. Amazon: Individual plan, 75p per item plus the referral fee (minimum 25p); Professional sellers pay £25 a month instead of 75p per item. Own website uses Stripe’s standard UK card rate (1.5% + 20p) and doesn’t include platform subscription costs.

Not included: promoted listings and ads, international sales, Amazon FBA fees, income tax and VAT schemes such as Flat Rate or the Margin Scheme. Compare payment providers in our payment fee calculator and postage in our courier price comparer.

How to use these numbers

Price from the break-even, not the competition. The break-even column shows the lowest price that covers every cost on each platform. If a competitor sells below it, they either source more cheaply or are losing money on each sale.

Watch small orders. Fixed fees per order, like eBay’s 30p to 40p, Etsy’s 20p listing and payment fees, and Amazon’s 75p per item on the Individual plan, take a much bigger share of a £5 sale than a £50 one.

Private or business? If you regularly buy items to resell, HMRC and the marketplaces may treat you as a business, even if you started by clearing out your wardrobe. Private-seller fee-free selling on eBay and Vinted is meant for personal items, so check which applies to you.

VAT changes the picture. Once you’re VAT registered, a sixth of everything a customer pays (including postage) goes to HMRC, but you can usually reclaim the VAT on marketplace fees. Use the “Business, VAT registered” option to see the effect.
