The short answer

Volusion is a hosted ecommerce platform founded in 1999. Plans cost $31.50–$269.10 a month billed yearly, but each plan has two limits: a yearly sales cap ($50k, $100k or $400k) and a product cap (100, 5,000 or unlimited). Hit either one and you move up a plan.

It suits small US stores that stay under those limits and use Volusion Payments. Growing stores usually pay far less on Shopify, and content-led stores will miss a built-in blog.

What Volusion is

Volusion is one of the original hosted store builders. It gives you a storefront, catalogue, checkout, hosting, SSL and PCI compliance for a monthly fee, managed from a browser.

It went through Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020 and emerged in January 2021. It still runs today, but reviewers often describe the platform as dated compared with newer rivals.

Stable enough to run a store, but not where the innovation is. Weigh that if you plan to grow for years on one platform.

Whichever ceiling you hit first decides your plan. A store with few products but strong sales, or many products but small sales, can both be pushed up a tier.

Two limits, and which one pushes you up

Most platforms limit either sales or products. Volusion limits both, which catches out stores at either end.

Payments: use Volusion Payments or pay extra

Volusion Payments is powered by Stripe and carries no Volusion transaction fee. If you use any other gateway, Volusion charges a “gateway maintenance fee” on every order.

On Personal, another gateway adds more than the plan itself once you pass about $2,500 a month in sales.

Volusion vs Shopify: what you pay as you grow

Because Volusion ties plans to sales, its platform fee climbs much faster than Shopify’s.

Above $100,000 a year, Volusion costs $190–$240 a month more. Shopify lets you choose your plan regardless of sales. Card fees are similar on both and not included.

What you get in return on Volusion’s higher plans includes phone orders, CRM, reviews, API access, a loyalty programme and phone support. Check whether you would actually use them before treating the higher fee as good value.

How setting up Volusion works

  1. Start the 14-day free trial. No card is needed.
  2. Pick a theme and customise it in the site builder.
  3. Add products, keeping your plan’s product cap in mind.
  4. Turn on Volusion Payments to avoid the gateway maintenance fee.
  5. Set shipping and tax.
  6. Connect your domain. SSL and hosting are included.
  7. Place a test order, then launch.

Volusion’s limits

  • Two caps on every plan: yearly sales and products.
  • An extra 0.35–1.25% per order if you don’t use Volusion Payments.
  • No built-in blog, which hurts content-led SEO.
  • Phone support only from Business ($269.10 a month billed yearly).
  • A dated platform, according to many recent reviews, with mixed support feedback.
  • A past bankruptcy. It is resolved, but worth knowing for a long-term choice.
