Etsy SEO: How to Get Your Listings Found in Etsy Search

Etsy sellers talk about SEO more than almost any other group of online merchants, and most of what they say is out of date. The rules that worked in 2019, keyword-stuffed titles above all, were rewritten by Etsy itself, and the ranking system now weighs how a listing performs once shoppers see it as heavily as it weighs the words in it. Sellers who learned Etsy SEO from old forum threads are optimizing for a search engine that no longer exists.

The audience is worth the effort. Etsy’s second quarter 2026 shareholder letter reports approximately 87 million active buyers on the marketplace, gross merchandise sales of $2.6 billion for the quarter, up 7.5% year over year, and spending per active buyer of $124 on a trailing twelve-month basis. Those buyers arrive already intending to purchase something handmade, vintage, or personalized, which is a level of intent most store owners spend years trying to build.

This guide explains how Etsy search decides what to show, what you control in a listing and a shop, and how to work with the system as it exists now rather than the one sellers remember.

How Etsy search works: match first, rank second

Etsy is more transparent than most platforms about its search. Its Seller Handbook article on how Etsy search works describes a two-stage process. First, the system finds listings that match the shopper’s query by looking at titles, tags, attributes, categories, and descriptions. Then it ranks those matches using signals about the listing and the shop: how well the listing has performed when shown before, how the shop treats customers, shipping price, recency, and the shopper’s own habits.

Two things in that article correct common seller myths. Star Seller status does not directly affect the order of search results (it is a trust badge that can lift conversion, which then helps ranking indirectly). And running Etsy Ads does not influence where listings appear in organic results outside the labeled ad slots. Neither buying ads nor chasing the badge is a substitute for the listing and shop work below.

Who you are competing with

Etsy’s marketplace is crowded and mature, which shapes what SEO can and cannot do. In its fourth quarter 2025 results, Etsy reported 5.6 million active sellers, roughly 46% of sales transacted through its mobile app, and 5.9 million “habitual” buyers who purchase frequently. Two consequences follow for anyone optimizing listings.

First, nearly half of buyers are on a phone screen, where titles truncate after a few words and the first image is most of the listing. Second, the habitual buyers, the ones Etsy cares most about keeping, see results shaped by their own history. Etsy has said its search personalizes results for individual shoppers, so two people typing the same query see different orders. There is no single “rank 1” to chase; there is a probability of appearing for the right shopper, and the goal of Etsy SEO is to raise it.

Etsy SEO: How to Get Your Listings Found in Etsy Search

Step 1: Match with every field, not only the title

Matching is where sellers leave the most on the table, because the title is only one of five fields Etsy reads. The Seller Handbook’s guide to getting found in search makes the point that attributes act like tags and that the most important terms belong at the beginning of the title. The full set of matching fields, and how to use each:

  • Title: up to 140 characters, with the two or three phrases shoppers actually search placed first, written to be read by a person
  • Tags: 13 slots of up to 20 characters each. Use all 13, use multi-word phrases rather than single words, and use variety rather than repeating the title’s phrases in different orders
  • Attributes: color, material, occasion, holiday, size, and the category-specific options. Fill in every relevant one; a term that appears as an attribute does not need a tag as well
  • Category: choose the most specific category available, since deeper categories unlock more attributes and match more specific searches
  • Description: Etsy now reads descriptions for matching and context, so the first paragraph should describe the item in plain, keyword-bearing language before the story and the care instructions

The variety rule matters most. A listing whose 13 tags are permutations of the same three words matches the same handful of queries thirteen times. A listing whose tags cover the item type, the style, the material, the occasion, the recipient, and the use case matches dozens of different searches.

Step 2: Titles under the current guidance

Etsy changed the rules on titles and said so. Its new guidance for listing titles states that search now takes a holistic view of the listing, including tags, attributes, descriptions, the first photo, and reviews, so the title no longer needs to do all the work. Etsy is pushing sellers toward clear, readable titles and has built a tool in the search visibility dashboard that suggests trimmed versions.

In practice this means the 140-character, comma-separated keyword wall is now the wrong shape. A title that reads “Personalized Leather Journal, Custom Name Notebook, Refillable A5 Cover” leads with what the item is, adds the two phrases a buyer would type, and stops. The keywords that used to be jammed in after that move to tags and attributes, where they match just as well without making the title unreadable on a phone.

Step 3: The first photo is a ranking factor

Etsy lists the first photo among the elements its search considers, and on mobile the first photo is nearly the whole listing card. Its job is to earn the click, and the click is the first of the engagement signals that feed listing quality. Listings can carry up to ten photos and a short video, and the set has a structure that works:

  • First photo: the item alone, well lit, filling the frame, on a clean background, shot to read clearly at thumbnail size
  • Scale photo: the item in a hand, on a body, or next to a familiar object
  • Detail photos: texture, stitching, engraving, the parts a buyer would inspect in a shop
  • Variation photo: all colors or sizes together, so buyers know the options exist before they click into the dropdown
  • Context photo: the item in use, styled the way the buyer will use it
  • Video: a few seconds of the item moving, opening, or being worn

Photograph the item, not the props. Etsy’s buyers are browsing for a specific thing, and a first photo where the product occupies a third of the frame loses to one where it fills it.

Step 4: Listing quality is a conversion score

Etsy’s ranking uses what it calls listing quality: how often a listing gets clicked, favorited, added to a cart, and purchased when it appears in search. A listing with strong quality signals can outrank one with better keywords, which is why the same tag set produces different results in different shops. Improving quality means improving conversion, and on Etsy conversion is driven by the same things as on any store: price clarity, shipping cost shown up front, complete descriptions, and reviews.

Reviews carry particular weight on a marketplace where every shop is a stranger. Our analysis of how online reviews influence purchases applies directly here, with one Etsy-specific note: Etsy states that new listings are still shown in search before they have any reviews, as long as the listing and shop have no other quality issues. A new listing’s job is to convert well enough in its first weeks to earn the reviews that then compound.

Step 5: Shop-level signals you cannot fake in a listing

Etsy ranks the shop as well as the item. Its search considers what Etsy calls the customer and market experience score, built from reviews, completed shop sections (About page, policies), and any cases or complaints against the shop. Shipping price is a factor too: Etsy has long said that listings offering free shipping, or shops with a free shipping guarantee, get priority in US search results for US buyers.

These signals reward the boring work that sellers often skip. Filling in policies, answering messages within a day, shipping on time, and resolving problems before they become cases are ranking activities on Etsy in a way they are not on Google. For sellers running Etsy alongside other channels, the operational discipline is the same one that our guide to marketplace management in ecommerce describes: the marketplace grades your service, and the grade shows up in your visibility.

Step 6: Recency, refreshing, and the renewal myth

Etsy gives new listings a small, temporary boost so it can gather data on how they perform. Sellers turned that into a ritual of renewing listings constantly to trigger the boost again, spending $0.20 per renewal for a bump that lasts hours. The boost is real but the strategy is not: renewing an unchanged listing tells Etsy nothing new, and a listing that has already been shown and ignored will be ranked on that history regardless.

What does work is genuine change. A new first photo, a rewritten title under the current guidance, updated attributes, or a corrected price gives Etsy a different listing to test, and the search visibility dashboard now flags listings where Etsy’s own system thinks adjustments would help. Treat that dashboard as the to-do list and leave the renewal button alone.

Step 7: Etsy Ads, Offsite Ads, and organic

Etsy sells two kinds of advertising, and both interact with organic visibility only through conversion. Etsy Ads place listings in labeled slots inside Etsy search; Offsite Ads place them on Google, social platforms, and other sites, charged as a fee on resulting sales (15% for most shops, 12% for shops above the revenue threshold where the program becomes mandatory). Neither buys organic position. What ads can do is generate the sales, favorites, and reviews that improve listing quality, which is the same indirect loop that exists between paid and organic search elsewhere; we compared the economics of that trade in our guide to ecommerce SEO vs paid ads. On Etsy, the sensible use of ads is to accelerate a new listing that already converts well organically, not to rescue one that does not.

Etsy alongside your own store

Etsy delivers buyers you would otherwise pay to acquire, and it charges for the privilege: a listing fee, a transaction fee on the sale and on shipping, payment processing, and Offsite Ads fees when they apply. Etsy’s own guidance has put its overall revenue take rate at roughly a quarter of the value of goods sold. That is the price of the audience, and for many sellers it is worth paying, but it is also the strongest argument for treating Etsy as one channel rather than the business. The customers who buy from you on Etsy belong to Etsy; the ones who buy from your own site belong to you. Which platform to build that site on, at the scale most Etsy sellers operate, is the question our guide to the best ecommerce platform for small business answers.

A note for digital product sellers

Digital downloads are one of Etsy’s largest and most competitive categories: printables, templates, patterns, fonts, planners. The search principles are identical, with two twists. First, listing quality signals accumulate fast because delivery is instant and reviews arrive quickly, so a digital listing’s first two weeks matter even more. Second, the margin structure makes Etsy’s fees feel heavier, since there is no product cost to hide them in. Sellers who outgrow the category often add a dedicated storefront for their catalog, and our comparison of the best ecommerce platforms for digital products covers the options built for exactly that.

Is Etsy SEO still worth the effort?

Etsy’s marketplace grew again in 2026 after two flat years, its buyer base is stable at scale, and its search is more transparent about what it rewards than any comparable platform. The work it rewards is not clever: complete listings, honest photos, readable titles, all 13 tags used with variety, fast shipping, and answered messages. Sellers who do that consistently rank; sellers who chase renewal tricks and keyword walls do not.

The broader question, whether selling online is worth building a business around at all, depends on more than one marketplace’s algorithm, and we take it up in our piece on whether ecommerce is worth it in 2026. For Etsy specifically, the answer is that the search system now favors sellers who behave like good shopkeepers, and that is a competition worth entering.
